From fear to gratitude

Albert is an 11-year-old boy from one of the poor slums in Egypt.

For a long time, he dreaded going to school. Every morning, his stomach twisted with fear, knowing what awaited him. His teacher would hit him for no reason, and his classmates mocked him for wearing glasses. The worst part, however, was being the only Christian in class—he felt completely alone. The other children's taunts and cruel words cut deeper than any slap.

Despite his parents’ constant pleas, Albert began to refuse to go to school. How could he walk into a place where he felt so unwanted? The more he resisted, the more hopeless he became. He was felt trapped, with no way out.

Then, one day, a Home Visitor, Youssef, from Mama Maggie’s ministry visited his home. Youssef immediately saw Albert's pain even before he spoke. He listened—not just to Albert's words, but to his silence, his fear, his unspoken cries for help. Youssef didn’t just tell Albert things would get better; he made sure of it.

Youssef taught Albert to stand tall, to respond with kindness and respect even when others tried to tear him down. He helped Albert see that he was more than the insults, more than the cruelty. He reminded Albert that Jesus Himself endured mockery and suffering, yet He forgave and even excused His tormentors, saying, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing" (Luke 23:34). Knowing that Christ bore far greater pain with love and forgiveness helped Albert to be strong and do the same.

And Youssef didn’t stop there—he personally ensured that Albert's teacher never hurt him again. Knowing someone cared enough to fight for him changed everything for Albert.

Now, he walks into school with confidence. The laughter no longer shook him, and the fear no longer paralyzed him. He was not alone.

In gratitude to God, Youssef and Albert wrote a daily prayer:

"Lord, thank You for Your love. Thank You for seeing me when I felt invisible. Thank You for sending people to stand by me when I felt weak. I know now that I am never alone because You are always by my side. Amen."

Each week a Home Visitor meets with a child just like Albert. They pray, hear a bible story and memorize a passage. The Home Visitor is a mentor, health worker, pastor, social worker and friend. Once a month the Home Visitor brings a Provision Basket with food, and often clothing, blankets and other necessities as needed for basic survival.
